Malmö Opera is looking for a set technician
Malmö Opera is the heart and voice of music drama in Skåne. The house was inaugurated in 1944 and is centrally located in the Öresund region, just 20 minutes from Copenhagen. The stage is one of the largest in Europe and the amphitheater-shaped auditorium accommodates 1500 visitors. We perform classical, modern, and newly written music drama. Malmö Opera has over 285 permanent employees and 500–700 engaged in plays per season. During a season, we produce over 300 performances for the main stage as well as for children's, youth, and touring activities.
We offer you employment in an inspiring environment where we work together to create optimal conditions for our audience to experience music theater in all its breadth. We believe that a diversity of skills creates the best conditions for Malmö Opera's work climate, creativity, and quality. Are you a responsive and meticulous team player who is passionate about stage work and enjoys irregular working hours? Do you want to be part of the team behind the scenes that realizes the artistic team's vision and contributes to providing the audience with a memorable experience?
Job Description
As a set technician, you are an important part of our technical team on stage. Under the supervision of the technical master, you receive the sets when they are delivered to the stage from our decoration workshops. Once the set is prepared on stage, the rehearsal phase begins. Your task is to ensure that the set pieces and equipment you are responsible for are in the right place at the right time up until the premiere. During performances, you are one of several employees who move the set during the show and manage the logistics around the stage. During the performance period, you are responsible for ongoing maintenance and check that the equipment functions satisfactorily. When a production is finished, your main task is to dismantle the set and participate in the unloading from the stage.
Malmö Opera performs in repertoire, which means you are actively involved in several different productions simultaneously. The position is often physically demanding, and therefore good physical condition is a fundamental requirement. Working hours are varied and scheduled during the day, evenings, and weekends.
Qualifications
You are responsible, flexible, and actively work to prevent complications. You have good judgment regarding risks in the work and are used to handling situations where you may be visible to the audience. Our technicians work multi-technically, which means that the departments for stage, lighting, and sound collaborate closely and across boundaries. For this reason, we have high demands on communication and teamwork skills. You are handy and know which tools and machines are used for different purposes. Being part of a group and working under supervision is as natural for you as taking your own initiatives within your area of responsibility and engaging others in the task when needed.
To succeed in the position, the following is required:
- Theatrical technical education or several years of experience in theatrical technical work
- Craft skills in wood and metal
- Competence in traditional theatrical techniques and associated equipment
- Experience with modern theater control technology
- Good physical condition
- Good knowledge of lighting and electrical technology
- Good Swedish and English in speech and writing
- Computer skills and a high ability to learn new systems and software
- Driving license B
Desirable skills and qualifications:
- Rigging course for stage and theater
- Forklift license
- Lift license (mobile working platforms).
- Certificate for Hot work or Flammable work.
- Experience with inventory systems, such as Trail.
Employment Conditions
The position is a permanent full-time employment with a 6-month probationary period. Working hours are primarily determined by the planning of productions and are scheduled for days, evenings, and weekends.
